Chamber Music Hall

Abstract

Gothenburg are building along the shoreline. The southern shoreline from Röda sten, Majorna to Masthugget and Järntorget are now the new areas for development in Gothenburg Along with the overall plans of densification of the city, it will directly or indirect effect areas with historical value. One of the areas under development is the Sockerbruket, an old industrial area born out of one of the old fortresses.

The site in question has endured many changes over the course of its lifetime. From a part of the old defense of Gothenburg, to the high time of being the only porter brewery in Sweden to todays multitude of designers, museums workshops and offices.

To develop within this historical area, a part of the thesis will investigate old drawings and draw inspiration from them in order to develop a new building at the site. The area has endured many changes and iterations until its current form and its adaptability generality is the reason that the area has survived and prospered The project will propose a chamber music hall which will fit into the context of the site.

The music hall will serve freelancing musicians and provide a platform for them in a premium location. Traditionally chamber music halls has been subordinate larger music halls in traditional concert houses in terms of size and location, but never the aesthetical and acoustical values. The possibilities of chamber music will be investigated in this thesis and developed into a proposed building that fit into the historical and contextual values of the site.
